A seventeenth-century manuscript copy Sir Thomas Hope's work on the Scots law, later published as Minor praticks. Many manuscript transcriptions of this work appear to have been circulated before the formal publication in 1726.

Commissioned major general in 1755, and appointed the following year as commander-in-chief of British forces in America during the French and Indian War, and named titular governor of Virginia.
